Angelos

The word 'Angelos' comes from the Greek word for 'messenger'. The Hebrew Scriptures were translated into Greek around the time of the second century B.C., and the translators chose this word instead of alternatives to avoid confusion. The word 'Daimon' could have been adopted but this refers to a unique Greek angelic guardian that can encourage good or bad behaviour in humans.
