A German expert in hermetic philosophy, Valentine Basil was born in the fourteenth century. He was the Prior of the Abbey of St Peter at Erfurt, although very little else is known about him. Olaus Borrichius claimed that Valentine concealed his scientific works in a pillar of the Abbey Church and they remained there until a thunder storm dislodged them. It's not certain whether he hid them out of a modest nature of because he feared a visit from the Inquisition. His writing was in high Dutch and German, in a change from the norm for the time which was Latin.
