Thirteenth century romance told of a dwarf called Laurin. He owned a magical rose garden, and nobody could enter it unless they lost either a hand or a foot. Two men named Dietrich and Witege entered the garden and rode through the rose bushes. Witege is dismounted by Laurin, and he is wounded by Dietrich he uses the invisibility cloak. They wrestle, and Dietrich grabs Laurin's belt which gives him super-human strength, helping him to defeat him.
The victors are invited by Laurin to his home in the mountains, and when they become tipsy at the banquet he imprisons them in his dungeon. Kunhild, a human woman, frees them and gives them their weapons. They take Laurin to Bern with them as a prisoner where he converts to Christianity and married Kunhild.
